Last week, our Year 10 Bronze Joint Award students completed their expedition training. On Tuesday Mr Mayers and Mr Dagen took groups on a training walk in Donard Forest. Back in school, each group had a session on expedition equipment and practised packing their rucksacks, followed by Basic First Aid training sessions, led by Stephen Hanna and ably assisted by Juneve Nicholls, Niamh Lindsay and Mr Scott.
On Wednesday our groups were ready to be released into the wild. Students individually lead different legs of the journey from school up to Tollymore’s youth camping site. There they pitched their tents and cooked up a feast on their stoves before navigating their way back to school. Fortunately, the weather was as fantastic as the students, who were an absolute pleasure to work with over the two days. To quote Mr Allen, ‘that was the best day of my teaching career!’
Next up is the Bronze qualifying expedition, which takes place on the 14th and 15th June. Well done, everyone, and thanks to all the staff involved over the two days
