Ms McCurdy writes: “The Shimna Amnesty Group marked Refugee Week with a series of fund-raising and awareness raising events to celebrate the richness and diversity brought to our society by refugees and asylum seekers. The group finished off the week with a trip to the NCC to watch 'The Swimmers' - the remarkable true story of Syrian sisters, Yusra and Sarah Mardini, who fled war-torn Damascus, undertaking a treacherous journey across the Mediterranean to reach safety. One year later, Yusra competed in the 100 metre freestyle at the Rio Olympics. An illuminating, emotional and empowering watch!
The group is looking forward to another busy year of activism when they return in September.”
