“On the evening of 15 October, Mr Milligan presented the Bailey Cup for Resilience to an inspiring young man:
The definition of resilience is ‘the ability to deal with change’. One of our students has had to deal with more change than most. Not just change, but adversity.
Back in 2020, Shay Milligan’s life was turned upside down when his two brothers were involved in a serious car crash. Shay’s brother Cian suffered life-threatening - and changing - injuries. Shay’s life, and those of everyone in his family, changed forever, with unimaginable challenges along the way.
Because of this, Shay missed out on two years of education, so much so that it was no easy task to get back into the routine. In doing so, he decided to change schools and arrived at Shimna in 2023.
If true resilience is the ability is to deal with change, Shay is a role model. We are delighted to see how well he has settled, with very good attendance, working hard for his GCSEs, excelling in sport and with a great friendship group.
But, more than that, Shay is one of those extraordinary individuals in life who hasn’t just handled change, he has brought about change. With the help and support of his family, Shay has undertaken numerous fund-raising activities in support of Air Ambulance, the charity that helped save his brother’s life, raising thousands of pounds along the way.
An airway run, that raised £1500
A skydive that raised over £5,000
A birthday fundraiser that raised £10,000
All of this time and effort given unselfishly, without seeking personal credit.
As his mother says: “Shay is very unassuming, as you know, and it was great to see him getting so involved to raise money himself. I’m sure there will be other things he’ll get involved with in the future”
In summary, Shay is an inspirational young man. Out of adversity, he has found strength in a way that very few of us ever have to find. He is a worthy recipient of this year’s Derek Bailey Cup for Resilience.”
