DoE students put the hard yards in training for Silver expedition

Last week, 20 participants completed their Silver Award practice expedition. Arriving in school on the Sunday evening, they completed their rucksack check before setting up camp in the school grounds. A delicious supper together was followed by an obligatory game of hide-and-seek. Clearly, you are never too old.

Up at the crack of dawn, the students showed impressive organisation and managed to set off in good time for their expedition. A tough start to the day saw all groups conquer the saddle between Donard and Commedagh, before splitting off on different routes. 2 groups took in the Bog of Donard and Dunnywater on their way to camp at Carrick Little, whereas the other two groups travelled along the Brandy Pad to Hares Gap, before dropping down to handrail Ben Crom before making their way to camp past the Blue Lough.

Needless to say, that evening there wasn't much noise in the camp after the two epic walks!

Day 2 saw the groups do these routes in reverse. In sweltering conditions, they showed fantastic fitness levels - and determination - to successfully make it back to school in one piece. And fair play to James - who survided an unsuspecting bog trap!

Well done to all involved! Coming up next month is the final 3-day expedition which will start in Kilbroney Park on Thursday. We wish all participants the best of luck for this upcoming adventure! Thanks to the staff involved - Mr Mayers, Mr Dagen, Mr Allen, Juneve Nichols, Niamh Lindsay and Mr Scott.
