College celebrates on Sixth Form results day

As usual, the release of A Level and BTEC examination results has seen celebration, sighs of relief and a few tears today. The return to 2019 levels has seen a drop in grades across Northern Ireland. Pleasingly, almost a quarter of the grades achieved by our Year 14 students were A*, A or the BTEC equivalent.

Happily, most of our Year 14 students have already secured their university, further education or apprenticeship places, with a few others still awaiting decisions. Destinations for Shimna students include Brighton, Bristol, Cardiff, Huddersfield, Liverpool, Manchester, Warwick and York, as well as Queen’s, Ulster, Stranmillis and SERC.

Congratulations to our Year 13 students on their results too. They have plenty to play for next year!

Some of our outgoing Year 14 students share their reflections

Mya Brennan, who achieved a Distinction* at BTEC and an A and B at A Level: “I’m elated with my results. I couldn’t have done it without the support from all of the Shimna staff. I cannot wait to continue my new educational journey, studying Psychology at the University of Liverpool in September.”

Robbie Gilmore, who achieved A*s: "Thanks to all the staff at Shimna for supporting me throughout my A Levels. I’m really looking forward to studying Maths at Warwick."

Liam Hawkins, whole achieved an A and two Bs: “While the past two years have been academically challenging, today I have realised it was worth all the hard work. I am very grateful to all my teachers for helping me to achieve my place at the University of Manchester and I look forward to pursuing my love of languages by studying Spanish and Italian at university!

Isabella Susay-Quinn, who achieved two A*s and an A: “I’m really pleased with my A Level results. It was a lot of hard work but paid off in the end. I am so looking forward to going to university and will be studying Law and Spanish at Bristol. I’m really grateful for all the help and support I’ve received from my teachers.”

Caitlin Ward, who achieved two BTEC distinctions and a C at A Level: “When I joined Shimna in the Sixth Form, I was welcomed with open arms. Shimna boosted my confidence, helped me make lifelong friends and prepared me for the future. The teachers and staff offered incredible support, both academically and personally. I’m excited to apply everything I’ve learned as I begin my apprenticeship with First Derivatives.”

Anna Young, who achieved A* and two As: “I’m so happy with my results which mean I can now take up a place to study Drama and English at Queen’s. I worked hard but I also had great support from the staff and the positive learning environment of Shimna‘s Sixth Form. I am over the moon!”
