Yesterday, our Year 8 students were treated to an unforgettable experience with Alan from the animal education company ‘Wee Critters’. Alan brought along a fascinating selection of vertebrate and invertebrate animals, sparking excitement, curiosity and a deeper appreciation for the natural world.
Students had the rare opportunity to meet and learn about a variety of creatures, including an armadillo, a majestic barn owl, a sleek snake, a tarantula, and even a hissing cockroach. Each animal showcased unique traits and adaptations, offering students a hands-on way to connect classroom lessons to real-life biology.
One of the workshop highlights was the armadillo, with its tough, armour-like shell that left students amazed at how it uses this defence mechanism in the wild. The barn owl captivated the audience with its silent flight and keen hunting skills, while the snake provided an up-close look at how reptiles move and sense their environment. For those brave enough, there was even a chance to observe the tarantula’s hairy legs and learn about its role as a predator in eco-systems.
The workshop wasn’t just about fun - it was also deeply educational. Students explored the differences between vertebrates and invertebrates, the importance of biodiversity, and the critical role each species plays in its habitat. Teachers noted how the visit tied directly into the science curriculum, reinforcing key concepts in a memorable way.
Alan’s engaging storytelling and expertise brought the animals to life, creating an interactive experience that students won’t soon forget. “It was incredible to see these animals up close,” said one Year 8 student. “I learned so much, and it was really fun too!”
